Initially he enjoyed this environment and the stature he gained from it. His presence proved to be beneficial for the congregation, as he drew large numbers of people. At the age of fourteen, he became a preacher at Fireside Pentecostal Assembly. He is also said to have been a student in Cullen’s French class, where it is believed he gained his initial interest in traveling to Paris. At Frederick Douglas Junior High, he wrote under the tutelage of Countee Cullen, a leading poet of the Harlem Renaissance. He attended Frederick Douglas Junior High School and DeWitt Clinton High School, where he wrote for the school magazines. In school, his pursuit of knowledge was encouraged by liberal feminist teachers, black and white alike. The family was affected by the Great Depression as were others living in poverty. As stepson of the elder Baldwin, James was subject to a great amount of harsh treatment. As the oldest of nine children, he had the task of helping to raise his siblings. Born on Augto Emma Berdis Jones, in a poor neighborhood known as the Hollow, Baldwin never knew his father. ![]() Harlem was a diverse community bustling with ideas and creativity. As a civil rights activist, he lent his resounding voice to the movement and was regarded by many as a perceptive authority on matters of race in the United States.īaldwin was born in the midst of the Harlem Renaissance and the Great Migration. His novels were often semi-biographical, bursting with the joys and pains of himself and of the people around him. The themes that often surfaced in his work were race, religion, and sexualities. His work was instrumental in deepening the understanding of race relations in the U.S. Original copies are scarce but Taschen issued a reprint in 2017.One of the great writers of the twentieth century, James Arthur Baldwin was a novelist, playwright, essayist, civil rights activist, lecturer and poet. After high school, he collaborated with Richard Avedon on a portrait photography book called Nothing Personal. Giovanni's Room is also important - this novel openly addressed homosexuality in 1953 when it was strictly taboo. Notes of a Native Son addresses race and racism in the US and Europe with a series of hard-hitting essays that first appeared in magazines. Religion is a reoccurring theme in Baldwin’s writing. It tells the story of a Harlem teenager and his struggles with family and the church. Go Tell it on the Mountain is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age novel. ![]() It takes something to conquer fiction and non-fiction in the space of two years. He is remembered for two books in particular - Go Tell it on the Mountain, his first novel which was published in 1953, and Notes of a Native Son, a collection of essays published in 1955. He’s now seen as one of the great writers of the 20 th century, an expert in dissecting painful social themes that remain relevant in the 21st century. A first edition of Go Tell it on the Mountain by James Baldwinīaldwin was so disenchanted with America’s racism that he went to live in France for much of his later life.
